US federal educational examples are not filing determinations. Check the stated year, entity, payment type, eligibility, elections and state rules with a qualified tax professional; historical defaults are not automatic current-year guidance.

About the 1099 Contractor Tracker

Use this payment register to reconcile contractor payments for a selected calendar year before reviewing federal Form 1099-NEC instructions. A payment total is evidence to investigate, not a determination that a form must be filed.

The sample rows are dated 2024. The year selector uses a $600 amount screen for 2024/2025 and $2,000 for 2026. These screens do not model every reporting obligation or exemption.

How the 1099 Contractor Tracker works

The summary groups trimmed contractor names and sums only rows whose payment date begins with the selected year. Undated rows and other years are excluded; keep separate records for two payees with similar names.

At or above the selected threshold the tool says 'Review reporting'. Corporations, attorneys, payment-card/third-party network transactions, backup withholding and payment classifications require the official instructions. A low total does not establish that no reporting is needed.

Worked example

Select 2026 and enter two dated payments of $1,500 and $600 to the same contractor name. The selected-year total is $2,100 and triggers review against the $2,000 amount screen.

Change the second payment date to 2025. The 2026 total becomes $1,500, below that amount screen. Select 2025 to see only the $600 payment. Changing the year does not change the dates or combine years.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Reconcile by payee and year against the bank ledger before filing.
  • Use masked sample identifiers here; retain actual W-9 and tax IDs in a secure authorized records system.
  • Do not treat a dollar threshold as the only filing rule. Check federal instructions and state requirements separately.

1099 Contractor Tracker: frequently asked questions

Does the tracker file a 1099 or validate a TIN?

No. It tracks entries locally and flags amounts. It does not validate identities, classify workers, prepare a compliant electronic filing or submit anything to the IRS.

Why is a payment missing from the total?

Check its date and the selected calendar year. Undated entries are excluded, so an incomplete date can understate the displayed total.

What changed for 2026?

The federal NEC amount screen modeled here increases from $600 to $2,000 for 2026 payments. Use current IRS instructions for the precise applicable reporting rules and future indexed thresholds; the tool does not guess future years.
