About the Sales Commission Calculator

Commission plans are meant to align a rep's paycheck with the company's revenue, but the moment a plan adds tiers, quotas, and accelerators, calculating the actual payout by hand becomes error-prone. Getting it wrong erodes trust fast — reps notice underpayment immediately, and overpayment quietly drains margin. A clear, repeatable calculation protects both sides.

This calculator models one of the most common structures in B2B sales: a base commission rate applied to sales up to quota, and a higher accelerated rate on every dollar sold above quota. Accelerators exist to keep top performers motivated after they hit target rather than coasting. The tool shows the split by component, the total payout, and quota attainment, so managers can design plans and reps can verify their checks.

How the Sales Commission Calculator works

You enter total sales, the quota, the base commission rate, and the accelerator rate that applies above quota. Sales up to the quota (the smaller of sales or quota) earn the base rate. Any amount above quota earns the accelerator rate. The two commission amounts are summed for the total payout.

Quota attainment is total sales divided by quota, shown as a percentage — 100% means the rep hit target exactly. The breakdown table separates the base tier from the accelerator tier so you can see exactly how much of the payout comes from clearing quota. If sales fall below quota, the accelerator portion is simply zero and only the base rate applies.

Worked example

Consider a rep who closed $120,000 against a $100,000 quota, with a 5% base rate and an 8% accelerator above quota. Attainment is $120,000 / $100,000 = 120%. The base tier covers the first $100,000 and earns $100,000 × 5% = $5,000.

The $20,000 sold above quota earns the accelerator: $20,000 × 8% = $1,600. Total commission is $5,000 + $1,600 = $6,600. Note how the accelerator rewards overachievement — that final $20,000 paid at 8% is worth proportionally more than it would have been at the flat 5% base rate, which is exactly the incentive the plan is designed to create.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Set quotas that are attainable for most of the team; if only a handful ever reach the accelerator, the plan motivates few and demoralizes many.
  • Keep the accelerator meaningfully higher than the base rate — a 5% to 8% jump is a real reward, whereas 5% to 5.5% barely registers.
  • Model your worst-case cost: multiply your top performers' expected over-quota sales by the accelerator rate to be sure the plan stays affordable.
  • Clarify what counts as 'sales' — booked, invoiced, or collected — since disputes over timing and clawbacks on refunds are the most common source of commission conflict.
  • Communicate the exact formula to reps. When people can predict their own payout, they sell toward the accelerator instead of second-guessing the plan.

Sales Commission Calculator: frequently asked questions

How does an accelerator commission actually work?

Sales up to quota are paid at the base rate; only the portion above quota is paid at the higher accelerator rate. It is a tiered structure, so a rep at 120% of quota does not get the accelerator on their whole number — just on the 20% that exceeded target.

What happens if a rep sells below quota?

The accelerator portion is zero and the entire amount is paid at the base rate. In the example structure, $80,000 in sales against a $100,000 quota at a 5% base would pay $4,000, with no accelerator because nothing was sold above quota.

How is quota attainment calculated?

It is total sales divided by quota, shown as a percentage. At $120,000 in sales against a $100,000 quota, attainment is 120%. It is the headline figure most sales teams use to rank performance and to trigger accelerators or bonuses.

Can I model a flat commission with no accelerator?

Yes — set the accelerator rate equal to the base rate. Then every dollar earns the same percentage regardless of quota, and the two tiers combine into a single effective rate on total sales.

Does this include base salary or on-target earnings?

No, it calculates the variable commission portion only. To find total compensation, add the rep's fixed base salary to this commission figure. On-target earnings (OTE) is typically base salary plus the commission earned at exactly 100% quota attainment.
